Reinventing CTE: Workplace Immersion at Brooklyn STEAM Center

Co-hosted by AASA + Transcend, in the spirit of Building Equitable Learning Environments.

School systems around the nation are focused on reinventing career readiness and making learning relevant. The Brooklyn STEAM Center is a pioneer in the emerging space of workplace immersion, where the workplace is the classroom. Launched through an innovative partnership between the NYCDOE and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC), the school is located onsite at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an industry ecosystem of over 400 manufacturing, creative and tech companies that is home to over 12,000 jobs. In this webinar, come learn how the STEAM Center maximizes the impact of this proximity to deeply engage industry partners and create an immersive experience that prepares students for futures in industries where high-wage jobs are available. You will learn specific strategies Brooklyn STEAM uses to dramatically shorten the feedback loop between industry and school, allowing industry experts to be a major driver of the relevance and rigor of the program, while students build social capital and the professional skills they’ll need to be successful alongside industry-relevant credentials. You will hear from students, teachers, leaders and industry partners, and the NYCDOE about their experience in this model and take away specific ideas around how to make this type of model successful in your context.
