This study reviewed 12 high-quality meta-analyses encompassing 523 unique studies (and approximately 1 million students from early childhood through high school) and found that school-based social-emotional learning (SEL) programs—designed to improve students’ day-to-day learning experiences (e.g., relationships, belonging, and emotional support)—consistently produced significant benefit for a range of outcomes including increased SEL skills, attitudes, prosocial behaviors, and academic achievement, and decreased conduct problems and emotional distress (post ds ranged from 0.09 to 0.70 and follow-up ds ranged from 0.07 to 0.33 depending on the outcome and the specific review). The authors also offer recommendations for future research, including better understanding the conditions and mechanisms by which programs are most effective.
